The Panji stories relate the adventures of the main hero Prince Panji in regaining his betrothed, Princess Sekartadji. Panji is from the kingdom of Janggala/Kuripan while Sekartadji is a princess from Daha/Kediri. Their union is a spiritual symbol of wisdom protecting the power of peace and purity.
These kingdoms correspond to historical kingdoms in ancient East Java which played an important role in the 13th-15th century Majapahit empire politics. This picture is from the Karangduwet group in the Wonosari regency, one of the very last active topeng troupes left in the Yogyakarta Province. The model for Panji is a young girl, denoting the fact that quite often in the popular theatre men roles are played by female dancers and vice-versa.
