NYOMAN NUARTA by Jim Supangkat
Between 1992 and 1999 he brought Indonesian artists to about 40 regional-international exhibitions; among them, Asian Modernism in Tokyo, Tradition/Tension: Contemporary Art in Asia in New York, Orientatie in Delt, Sao Paulo Biennale (Brazil), Sydney Biennale (Australia), Asia-Pacific Trienniale of Contemporary Art (Australia). He was also the curator for several important exhibitions within Indonesia, including; Contemporary Art of the Non-Aligned Countries in Jakarta, Biennale Jakarta IX, Modernitas Indonesia Dalam Representasi Seni Rupa (the inaugural exhibition for the Indonesian National Gallery), and Sketsa-sketsa Masa Perjuangan Srihadi Soedarsono at the Lontar Gallery, Jakarta.
In 1997 the was awarded the international "Prince Clauss Award" from the Netherlands, in recognition of his success in promoting Third World culture to the international community.
The third son of Dr. Supangkat Danusaputro, "Jim entered the Fine Arts Department of the Bandung Institute of Technology in 1970. At the same time, he was a student in the Architecture Department of Parahyangan University, Bandung. In a relatively short time, he completed his studies in Fine Arts, graduating in 1975. He left the Architecture Department after two years. With his fervent interest in philosophy and esthetics, Jim studies with Dick Hartoko OSJ, the cultural observer and philosopher in Yogyakarta between 1973 and 1975, while completing his thesis. Between 1979–1980, he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Psychopolis, Den Haag, the Netherlands.
